Weekend update - cross country and road
Whilst many of the nation's best runners were in action at the European Cross Country Championships, there was plenty of domestic action over the weekend with highlights on the roads in Telford and Stockport and on the country in Scotland and Wales.
While many of the nation's best runners were at European Cross Country Championships, where the British team came away with six medals, the quality at home was as high as ever.
Telford 10k
Emily Hosker-Thornhill (handicap -1.6) continued her fine winter form, as she showed her rivals a clean pair of heels to win the Telford 10km women’s race. The Aldershot, Farnham and District athlete crossed the line in 32:52, with Hayley Carruthers (handicap -0.7) clocking a 30 second personal best ahead of Jenny Nesbitt (handicap -0.6).
The men’s race saw 17 athletes break the 30 minute barrier, Callan Moody led the way with a 29:31 personal best. Just three seconds separated the first six athletes, with Jack Gray (handicap -5.1) and Lucian Allison (handicap -4.7) taking second and third respectively.
Stockport 10
Jack Martin (handicap -5.2), from Stockport Harriers, ran his club’s 10 mile event which took him past his home and many of his training routes. He crossed the line first at the Stockport 10 Mile event in PB of 50:01. The women's event saw Julie Briscoe (handicap 0.6) win by over 400 metres in 59:06.
Scottish East District Cross Country Championships, Aberdeen
Jamie Crow (handicap -3.3) returned from his scholarship base in Texas, USA, to win the regional championships. The Central AC man edged out Michael Christoforou (handicap -4.2) and Calum McKenzie (handicap 3.5). The women’s race was much more clear cut, with Morag Miller (nee MacClarty) winning by nearly two minutes.
Scottish West District Cross Country Championships, Kilmarnock,
A race-long epic battle saw Lachlan Oates (handicap 4.4) prevail in the senior men’s race as he got the better of GB mountain running international Andrew Douglas (handicap 4.7).
In the women’s race, Elspeth Curran (handicap 0.4) continued her great start to the cross country season, putting almost a minute between herself and her nearest rival.
Welsh Inter-Regional Cross Country Championships
On a muddy course, James Hunt (handicap -3.9) and Alaw Beynon-Thomas (handicap 1.8) were dominant winners at Llandrindod Wells in Mid Wales. Heavy rain had challenged the area for several days, leading to difficult conditions on an undulating course.
