Weekend update
There were records for Keely Hodgkinson (800m) and Neil Gouley (1500m), this weekend, with Laura Muir (1000m) also dominating at the WIT final in Birmingham Robbie Britton set a new UK 24-hour road distance best performance in Italy.

At the English National Cross Country Championships, held at Bolesworth Castle in Cheshire, James Kingston (handicap -6.3) and Sarah Astin (handicap -1.1) were the senior winners, while European U20 champion Will Barnicoat (handicap -5.5) reigned supreme in the junior men’s race. Beatrice Wood (handicap 2.0) won the junior women’s title.
Kingston won by six seconds from Jack Gray (handicap -5.7), while David Stone (handicap -2.8) edged out Richard Allen (handicap -4.7) to take the final podium slot.
As for Astin, she held off the fight of veteran GB & NI international Gemma Steel (handicap -1.3) for the senior women’s crown, with Niamh Bridson Hubbard (handicap -1.1) taking third place.
Two months on from his European gold in Turin, Barnicoat showed his class as he won by almost 50 seconds from Ben Brown (handicap -4.8). Joe Ponter (handicap -3.5) sealed the bronze.
In the junior women’s race, Wood was a narrow winner ahead of Megan Gadsby (handicap 0.5) and Lily Neate (handicap 3.0). - Results
Logan Rees (handicap -2.0) and Scout Adkin (handicap 1.4) won the senior titles at the Scottish National Cross Country Championships in Falkirk. Matt Knowles (handicap -5.4) and Hannah Ryding (handicap 0.3) triumphed in the junior categories.
Rees (Fife) got the better of Central’s Jamie Crowe (handicap -4.4) to seal the senior men’s crown, with Hamish Hickey (handicap -5.6) rounded out the men’s podium positions.
World and European mountain running medallist Scout Adkin excelled on the cross country terrain as she won ahead of Alice Goodall (handicap -0.6) and Stephanie Pennycook (handicap 0.0).
Hannah Ryding, a week after racing as part of the GB & NI squad at the World Cross Country Championships in Australia, returned to Scotland to win the junior women’s race. Knowles was the winner of the junior men’s race. - Results
In Brecon, at the Welsh Cross Country Championships, Olivia Tsmin (handicap -0.7) and Dewi Griffiths (handicap -5.6) were the senior winners, while Beca Haf Bown (handicap 2.5) and Dafydd Jones (handicap -2.3) won the junior races.
Tsim won the senior women’s race ahead of Lucy Marland (handicap 1.5) and Martha Owen (handicap ).
Griffiths won another Welsh title comfortably with Tom Wood (handicap -4.1) and Dan Nash (handicap -4.0) who secured the other podium positions.
Beca Haf Bown, an U17 athlete, won ahead of Gwenno Goode (handicap 4.0) who was the first U20 athlete across the line.
Jones won the junior men’s race ahead of Lloyd Sheppard-Brown (handicap -4.0) and Adam Barber (handicap -3.9). - Results
The Northern Ireland and Ulster Cross Country Championships, in Belfast saw Grace Carson (handicap -1.8) and Finn McNally (handicap -5.3) secure the senior titles in dominant fashion.
Carson, who was fifth in the U23 race at the European Cross Country Championships in December, was a clear winner in the senior race as she finished over a minute and a half ahead of Sarah Lavery (handicap 1.6), with Hannah Gilliland (handicap 0.8) in third place.
McNally sealed the senior men’s title by over 10 seconds from Andrew Milligan (handicap.-5.7 ) with Neil Johnston (handicap -4.8) the same margin back from Milligan for the bronze medal. - Results
Robbie Britton (handicap 2.8) has set a new British record on his way to victory in the Turin 24 Hour race. He ran a total distance of 277.439km / 172.392 Miles. This added 2959 km to the previous record of Dave Dowdle. The previous mark of 274.480km has stood for over 30 years having been set on 23 May 1982.
The Turin race was held on 1.013 km road loop in a park in the Italian city, whereas Dowdle’s was set on a 400 metre track.
A small British contingent had good results at the first major European ultra-trail race of the year, Transgrancanaria 85km Trail Race. In the Canary Islands George Foster (handicap 5.2), took the victory from Austrian Alex Hutter. In the women’s race,Meryl Cooper, a GB representative in Thailand, placed fifth behind a strong European contingent. In the shorter 24km event Helm Hills GB & NI international Chris Richards (handicap -2.6) was third in 2:04:50
At the Ultra 50km Lauf Ha wei 50 in Germany, Nikki Johnstone (handicap -1.7) set a time of 2:56:21 for third place in the race. The time improves the existing Scottish 50k road best of 2:56:37 set by Ross Houston at Perth in 2016.
