Weekend update

SESEMANN Wightman finishing stumbling in

The weekend saw plenty of action across the country with some sterling performances and championship qualifying times on the indoor tracks. The BMC event in Sheffield saw Issy Boffey achieve the European Athletics Indoor Championship qualifying standard for 800m and there was a tremendous battle between World Champion Jake Wightman and Phil Sessemann in the 3000m. In Scotland, Glasgow was host to scores of PBs at the Emirates Arena.

At the popular BMC Grand Prix in Sheffield, Issy Boffey (handicap -0.4) set an outright 800m personal best and achieved a qualifying standard for the European Indoor Championships in the process at the British Milers Club GP in South Yorkshire. Boffey, who reached the final of the Europeans in 2021, ran a time of 2:00.99, improving upon her previous best of 2:01.24.

Elsewhere in Sheffield, Philip Sesemann (handicap -6.3) won a thrilling final lap sprint against 1500m world champion Jake Wightman (handicap -6.6) in the 3000m. Sesemann, who was the top British finisher in the London Marathon in October, clocked 7:54.34 to Wightman’s 7:54.58. Charles Wheeler (handicap -6.0)  with 7:57.06  set a lifetime best in chasing home the headline favourites.

Hannah Nuttall (handicap -1.2) also knocked a significant chunk off her 3000m personal best as she won the women’s race in a time of 8:52.63.  

At the BMC / Glasgow AA Metric Miler Meeting,  Lynsey Sharp (handicap 8.4) returned to the track following the birth of her son and won the 600m race at the Emirates Arena. Racing for the first time since 2019, the Edinburgh athlete clocked a time of 1:28.91 over the popular distance. Ben MacMillan (handicap -5.6) took the Scottish 3000m title with a classy PB of 8:02.47 ahead of Jack Patton (handicap -3.9) who ran 8:07.71.  Eloise Walker (handicap -1.1) was the fastest woman with 8:56.77.
