Weekend update
The extended Jubilee Weekend provided outstanding results with the best performances coming from Eilish McColgan who set a Scottish record over 10 000m and Jake Wightman who won the Diamond League 1500m in Rabat, Morocco.
At the FBK Games in Hengelo, Netherlands, Eilish McColgan (handicap -3.9) run a superb solo time of 30:19.02, which moved her to second on the UK all-time list for 10,000m. The time was also the fifth quickest ever by a European and was only 18 seconds outside Paula Radcliffe’s UK record.
McColgan moved clear from the rest of the field in the opening laps, and suddenly her main opponents were the clock and the conditions. At halfway she was in a strong position for a UK record but although the 30:01.09 time was out of grasp today; it was another fine performance and victory by the Scottish athlete who has been in supreme form all season.
There was plenty of British representation in the men’s 1500m with George Mills (handicap -6.0) the first of them to cross the line in fifth in a time of 3:36.92. Elliot Giles (handicap -6.3) returned to action with 3:37.48 in eighth, while Archie Davis (handicap -5.6) closed in 3:40.11.
At the Wanda Diamond League in Rabat, Morocco, Jake Wightman (handicap -6.0) earned one of the best victories of his career as he won the men’s 1500m ahead of Jake Heyward (handicap -5.1). The Edinburgh athlete posted a season’s best of 3:32.62, while Heyward clocked 3:33.54 just behind. There was also a personal best and second place for Amy-Eloise Markovc (handicap -2.1) in the women’s 3000m; the time 8:40.32.
In Poland, at the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial, Jemma Reekie (handicap -0.7) ran inside the World Championship qualifying standard for the first time in 2022 – having achieved it last year – to show a return to her top form. The Olympic finalist came through for second place in a time of 1:58.44.
Jamie Webb (handicap -5.8) achieved a European standard with a time of 1:45.54 for eighth in the men’s 800m.
The BoXX United Manchester saw Kyle Langford (handicap -6.2) overcome the challenge of Ben Pattison (handicap -5.7) to win the men’s 800m at Sportscity. The Shaftesbury Barnet athlete won by less than half a second in a time of 1:46.48.
At the Irena Szewinska Memorial in Bydgoszcz, Poland, Matthew Stonier (handicap -6.1) continued his excellent form as he bagged a European qualifying standard in the men’s 1500m. The Briton won the prestigious Emsley Carr mile at the Night of 10,000m PBs last month, and showed his rise by posting a time of 3:35.92 for third place in the race.
There was a race win for Adelle Tracey (handicap -2.3) in the women’s 800m as she crossed the line in 2:01.57 just ahead of Ellie Baker (handicap -2.1).
In the US at the Music City Track Carnival Festival, Jamaine Coleman (handicap -5.9) was the star of the meeting for the British athletes as he secured a personal best and European qualifying standard in the men’s 3000m Steeplechase. The Preston athlete, who competed for GB & NI over 3000m at the world indoors in March, revised his best time over the steeplechase discipline to 8:28.56.
Eloise Walker (handicap 0.0) achieved another Scottish Commonwealth Games standard as she ran a lifetime best of 15:31.26 on her way to eighth in the women’s 5000m in France at the Montreuil International Meeting.
The fastest parkruns came from Gemma Steel (handicap -0.8) and Timothy Lefroy (handicap -2.8) at the Watermead County Park and the Dulwich parkruns. Steel ran 16:25 with Lefroy posting 14:47 in Dulwich.
