Weekend update
British athletes were in fine form ahead of key championships. Eilish McColgan broke the European 10km road running record in Manchester, while others were clocking major championship qualifying times in the United States. Ben MacMillan ran the fastest of the 38 Monument Mile races in Stirling. The fastest parkruns were in Cardiff and Southampton.
At the Great Manchester Run , Eilish McColgan (handicap -4.0) broke Paula’s Radcliffe’s British and European 10km records.
The Scottish athlete has been in remarkable form so far in 2022, and her performance in the north west continued her record-breaking run which has seen her shake up the UK record lists.The time of 30:19 was two seconds quicker than Radcliffe set in back in 2003. She finished second in the race behind Kenya’s Hellen Obiri who won in 30:15.
In the men’s race New Zealand runner, Jake Robertson won in 28:06 ahead of Liverpool student, Abdi Sharif (handicap 0.5) who ran a massive PB of 28:29 ahead of Ben Connor’s (handicap -5.9) 28:31.
The men’s Great Manchester Half Marathon was won convincingly by Chris Thompson (handicap -5.3) in 64:29 with local runner, Tom Charles (handicap -3.0) a distant second in 1:08:22. Sarah Webster (handicap 0.9) won the women’s race in 76:41 ahead of Kelly Edwards’ (handicap 1.9) 79:21.
On the East coast of the USA, at the Track Night NYC, Olympic finalist Lizzie Bird (handicap 0.4) ran a European and Commonwealth Games standard as she won the women’s 3000m steeplechase in a time of 9:30.57. Meanwhile, Adelle Tracey (handicap -2.3) ran a fine season best of 2:00.79 in the women’s 800m.
The USTAF Distance Classic at Mt. SAC saw 2019 world finalist Neil Gourley (handicap -6.4) is rounding into great shape as he posted 3:35.43, inside the European standard, over 1500m. He was just 0.43s outside the world standard, but he won the race well in California.
At the Monument Mile Classic hosted by Stirling University many age group records were recorded over the 38 separate mile races!
Ben MacMillan (handicap -4.7) ran the fastest time on the night, becoming the first Scot to break the four-minute barrier on Scottish soil since 1985 with 3:57.76. Corey Campbell (handicap -3.9) took the British U17 Record with 4:05.77.
A new women’s W40 British Record was set by Phillippa Millage (handicap 2.6) with 4:48.07 behind overall senior winner Niamh Carr’s (handicap 0.5) 4:46.40. Fiona Matheson (handicap 4.8) showed outstanding form to break the W60 World Record with 5:38.55.
The fastest parkruns were at Cardiff where Felix McGrath (handicap -4.2), ran 14:57 and Annie Mann (handicap 1.6),ran 17:11 in the Southampton parkrun
