Weekend update
The main event for domestic cross country runners took place in Loughborogh at the Cross Challenge Final incorporated in the Counties Athletic Union (CAU) Championships. Elsewhere there was plenty of action taking place around the world including the Word University XC Championships and the Collegiate Indoor Championships.in the USA.
The British Athletics Inter Counties Cross Country Championships and Cross Challenge Final, is fully reported here. Calum Johnson (handicap -6.1) and Mhairi MacLennan (handicap -1.1) were senior winners on the day.
At the FISU World University Cross Country Championships in Portugal,Izzy Fry (handicap -1.2) was crowned World University Champion as she ran the race of her life to top the podium.
She was joined on the podium by compatriot Saskia Millard (handicap -0.2) who followed to take the silver medal, while Megan Keith (handicap -0.8) was fifth and Kirsty Walker (handicap -1.5) ninth as the British women dominated the contest.
A second medal came for the British team in the mixed relay as they finished behind France who took the gold and ahead of Spain comfortably to secure the silver.
The quartet of Alexandra Millard (handicap -0.5), Ned Potter (handicap -4.9), Sabrina Sinha (handicap 0.3) and Justin Davies (handicap -4.4) produced a solid display to achieve the medal moment.
In the men’s race, Cameron Allan (handicap -4.5) was the top British finisher in 11th, followed by Alex Ediker (handicap -4.9) and Joe Hudson (handicap -5.7) in 17th and 18th respectively.
At the NCAA Div I Indoor Championship in Birmingham Alabama,Charles Hicks (handicap -6.4) laid down his track credentials as he took bronze in the men’s 3000m. The Stanford University student who won European Cross Country gold in the U23 age group last December, clocked a time of 8:00.23.
In the senior women’s mile, Ellie Leather (handicap -0.7) was also third with a time of 4:35.62.
Yusuf Bizimana (handicap -5.9) and Tiarnan Crorken (handicap -5.0) starred in the men’s 800m final, with the pair finishing fourth and fifth respectively in a tactical final.
At the Division 2 Indoor Championships in Pittsburg, Kansas, Callum Elson (handicap -5.0) took gold with a tactical win in 4:08.59, a full 9 seconds outside of his best time.
Jack Rowe (handicap -6.4) was impressive over 10k in Berlin with a 28:24 road performance for 3rd place at the Invitational 10k.
Emile Cairess (handicap -6.9) ran at the Ghent Half Marathon finishing 5th in a PB of 61:16. Paulos Surafel (handicap -5.6) ran a PB too with 61:51 after passing through 10k in 28:30. Philip Sesemann (handicap -5.7) posted a solid 63:32.
At the Podium 5k, in Barrowford, Alfie Manthorpe (handicap -5.2) won in 14:09, one second ahead of David Mullarkey (handicap -4.9). The fastest woman was Megan Davies (handicap -2.1) with 16:00 ahead of Eleanor Bolton (handicap -1.9) and Steph Pennycook (handicap -1.1) in 16:05 and 16:06 respectively.
