Weekend update
The Sunday Wanda Diamond League in Stockholm produced impressive performances from Keely Hodgkinson (handicap -2.2) and Elliot Giles (handicap -7.1) with 800m PBs, coming just two days after Eilish McColgan (handicap -3.5) set an amazing UK record over 5000m with 14:28.55.
In the Stockholm meeting Keely Hodgkinson (handicap -2.5) moved to third on the women’s 800m UK all-time list, behind only Dame Kelly Holmes and Kirsty Wade, as she ran 1:57.51 in Sweden. The time also improved her British U20 record which previously stood at 1:58.89.She was fourth overall in a very quick race which was won by Rose Mary Almanza (CUB) from Natoya Goule (JAM) in 1:56.28, a meet record.
There was an outdoor 800m lifetime best for Elliot Giles (handicap -7.1) as he posted a time of 1:44.05 to finish third overall. Marco Arop (CAN) took the pace on over the last lap, but as he faded in the final stages, Ferguson Cheruiyot Rotich (KEN) overhauled him for the win, but the Canadian just managed to hold off the British champion. Jamie Webb (handicap -6.9) finished in eighth place.
Aimee Pratt (handicap -1.2) was 10th in the women’s 3000m steeplechase in a time of 9:39.12.
There were a trio of PBs for the Brits in the men’s non-Diamond Race 800m. Archie Davis (handicap -6.2) improved his best to 1:44.72 as he finished narrowly behind Kenya’s Jonathan Kitilit in a time of 1:44.68. Piers Copeland (handicap -6.5) was the next Briton across the line in 1:45.77 for third, while Jake Heyward (handicap -6.5) was fifth in 1:45.47.
In the men’s 3000m steeplechase, Zak Seddon (handicap -5.4), who was called-up to the Olympic team earlier this week, was second overall in a season's best of 8:23.22 behind Ethiopia’s Samuel Firewu in 8:20.27.
At the Wanda Diamond League in Oslo, Norway, Eilish McColgan (handicap -3.5) broke the women’s 5000m British record after a phenomenal performance saw her post a time of 14:28.55 at the Bislett Games.
The Scottish athlete, who will compete over the 5000m and 10,000m in Tokyo, revised the previous best, which was set by Paula Radcliffe in 2004 with 14:29.11. McColgan finished fourth overall in a very quick race.
Adelle Tracey (handicap -2.4) was seventh in the women’s 800m in a time of 2:00.82, while Charlie Da’Vall Grice (handicap -6.8) was ninth in the Svein Arne Hansen Dream Mile in a time of 3:54.97.
