Weekend update
The highlights of the weekend came predominantly from the USA. Finley McLear and James Young were the standout performances with a silver medal for Finley in the Division I 800m and a gold medal for James Young in the Division II championships over the mile.
The NCAA Division I Championships are often a tougher option than many major championships. At the 2021 Division I Indoor championships, Finley Mclear (handicap -6.2), ran 1:45.91 for second place in the 800m just 0.01s behind the winner. As a former steeplechase champion, McLear may have the tools to improve on Mark Rowland’s long standing British record.
Tom Dodd (handicap -5.9) and Yusuf Bizimana (handicap -5.9) both made the mile final, clocking 3:58:65 and 3:59:55 for seventh and eight place respectively behind the 19-year old sensation, Cole Hocker from Oregon, who did a Jakon Ingebrigsten by winning both the mile and the 3000m and in much faster times within the hour! 3:53.71 was his mile wining time (1500m equivalent of 3:35) but an hour later he nailed a close victory ahead of his team mate in 7:46.15 over 3000m. Jakob has competition from this young American!
In the NCAA Division II competition, James Young (handicap -4.3) won the Men’s Mile race in a PB of 4:00:40. Seb Anthony was an impressive silver medallist here too running a timely PB of 1:48.74 over 800m. Toni Moore (handicap 2.5) ran 17:28:26 to place 12th in the women’s 5000m.
