Weekend Update
There have been some fabulous performances this week in a variety of events, including Mountain Running. Andrew Douglas and Sarah McCormack (pictured) came away as winners of the World Cup series that started back in May.
In the final World Cup race on the Smarna Gora in Slovenia, Sarah McCormack (handicap -9.4) finished second behind defending champion Lucy Murigi (Kenya).
McCormack, who is based at Ambleside in Cumbria with a best 5k of 15:46, had already done enough to lift the World Cup trophy after a consistent season over varying distances and disciplines. Emma Clayton (handicap 5.4) showed a return to form with a 5th place finish.
In the men’s race, Andrew Douglas (handicap -3.5) lifted the 2019 Mountain Running World Cup title after a season of fabulously consistent racing for the Scottish athlete. Zak Hanna (handicap -1.1) finished ninth which put him 5th overall in the World Cup rankings, having finished in the top ten in the four races he ran.
At the Manchester Half Marathon, Ben Connor (handicap -6.5) and Lily Partridge (handicap -0.8) were the winners with 1:03.12 and 1:13.44 respectively.
Following Ben home was Wayany Gherbeilasie in 1:04:06 and Frank Baddick (handicap -4.7) in 1:04:18.
Chasing Lily round familiar streets was Marple based athlete Jip Vastenburg who took second place in 1:14:18. Third went to Elinor Kirk (handicap -0.1) of Swansea Harriers in 1:16:13.
Samuel Kolek (Liverpool Harriers) convincingly won the men’s wheelchair race in Manchester in a PB of 52:50, ahead of Josh Hartley (Coventry) clocking 55:49, just ahead of Anton Shepherd. Ellie Page (Coventry) won the women’s race ahead in 1:19.42.
Husband and wife couple, Joe Morwood (handicap -4.8) and Stephanie Twell (handicap -2.8), were bringing home the cabbages at the classic Cabbage Patch 10 race in Teddington.
Morwood ran 50:18 over the flat, fast 10 mile course and Twell ran 55:02. Finn McNally (handicap -4.3) scored an impressive 2nd place in 50:34 with Nick Torry (handicap -4.5) 3rd in 50:45. Twell had a more comfortable victory well clear of 2nd place athlete Emily Hosker-Thornhill (handicap -0.9) who ran 59:54 and Caroline Hoyte (handicap 1.8) who ran 60:10.
Ross Millington (handicap -4.0) and Adam Craig (handicap -5.0) had impressive runs at the 4 Mijl van Groningen race in the Netherlands. Millington finished 6th in 18:10 and Craig 11th in 18:25.
The British Athletics Cross Challenge Series kicked off at Cardiff, with Marc Scott (handicap -6.1) and Charlotte Arter (handicap -1.8) winning the senior races in style. A full report is here.
