Weekend Update

Highlights from the weekend include a PB for Jess Piasecki in the half marathon and a near miss for a father and son team attempting a world record in the Belfast Half Marathon.

Jess Piasecki (handicap -0.8) set a new half marathon personal best of 71:34 as she claimed victory at the Mattoni Ústí nad Labem Half Marathon in the Czech Republic at the weekend. The Stockport distance specialist lowered her previous best, by two seconds as she cut the tape just ahead of Daria Mykhailova (UKR), who clocked 71:36.

In the men’s race, Joshua Griffiths (handicap -5.7) also lowered his previous half marathon best, clocking 64:23 as he came home in fifth position.

Gideon Kipsang made it three in a row at the Belfast Half Marathon with his winning time of 66:58. Eoin Hughes (handicap -3.2) was second in a personal best 68.30, with John Black (handicap -2.9) of North Belfast Harriers third in 69.12.

Eoin and his 59-year old supervet dad Tommy Hughes (handicap -1.9) with 72:33, narrowly missed out on a Guinness World Record for fastest father and son completing a half marathon with just 20 seconds in it. The pair are now aiming to beat the father and son record for a marathon at Frankfurt next month.

Dominating the women’s race was Ann Marie McGlynn (handicap -0.2) who had over three minutes to spare when winning in 72:58. Gladys Ganiel of North Belfast Harriers was second in 77:19

Natasha Cockram (handicap -0.8) and Kieran Clements (handicap -5.5) were in top notch form at The Swansea Bay 10k with 33:26 and 30:03 winning times respectively.
