The winner of the Darlington 10k was Paralympian, Wondiye Fikre Indelbu who clocked 30:10. Wondiye won silver in the T46 men's 1500m at the Paralympics last September when he was running for Ethiopia. He moved to Teeside to seek asylum and shortly afterwards and, in October, he registered his first score on the runbritain handicap scoring system at the Albert parkrun where he is a regular. His first score was 1.9. Over the last 10 months he has steadily chipped away and has gone from MINUS 2.3 to MINUS 3.3 through July and August with great results at Hamsterley Forest 10k (33:44), New Marske Victorian 10k (31:22) and Jane Tomlinson's York 10k (31:14).
Yesterday he was pushed all the way by Yared Hagos who finished just one second behind.
First woman home was Alyson Dixon, who earlier in the year had come tantalisingly close to the qualifiying time for the world championships marathon, when she ran 2:31:08 at Brighton. However, Alyson was left at home to watch her GB teammates, Susan Partridge and Sonia Samuels finish 10th and 16th respectively on Saturday morning before taking the Darlington 10k by storm and winning in a time of 34:07.
