7028 finished the Jane Tomlinson 10k Run for All in Leeds on Sunday in very warm conditions. This race was truly a Run for All with celebreties, elite runners, club runners and recreational runners taking to the streets of Leeds. Amongst the runners was Emmerdale star, Gaynor Faye. First across the line was Tesfaye Debele in a time of 30:41 and Pauline Munro was the first female in 34:53.

The Standard Chartered Great City Race took place last Thursday evening. Rush hour across London’s Square Mile was an altogether different sight as the City’s closed-off streets welcomed the 5,294 runners from over 350 companies for this annual race.

The competitive race was once again a family affair. In the individual men’s category, Phil Wicks from Legal & General scooped his sixth win in seven years in a blistering time of 14 minutes 45 seconds, with Huw Lobb from DMW Group second and James McMulland from KPMG third.

In the individual female category, Phil’s wife Emily from Punter Southall took the honours, for the fifth consecutive time, in a time of 16 minutes 55 seconds. Katy Webster from Ofcom came second and Lara Bromilow from HSBC Bank came third.

Speaking after the race, Phil Wicks, said: "The weather was perfect today. It was incredible out there and I’m so pleased that Emily won the women’s race. It’s fun to blast around and soak up the great atmosphere."

The 5k race helped to raise significant funds and awareness for Seeing is Believing, a global initiative that tackles avoidable blindness and the official race beneficiary. With £10 from every entry going to this charitable initiative each person who registered to run provided enough funds to cover the cost of a trichiasis operation. In addition to this, the race registrations collectively raised over USD $59,000 which could provide enough medication to help tackle trachoma in the Kasempa District of Zambia – protecting a population of 73,740 people.

A group of celebrities from the worlds of sport and entertainment showed their support for Seeing is Believing by taking on the challenge of running the race blindfolded. The team included England cricket legend Mike Gatting OBE, TV presenter Chris Hollins, Harlequins RFC player Nick Evans and 5-times Paralympic running gold medallist Noel Thatcher MBE.

Richard Holmes, CEO Europe at Standard Chartered Bank, ran along side celebrities and said: "I would like to thank everyone involved for helping to make this event such a memorable and enjoyable occasion. The spirit among all the runners and support was fantastic.

"This year’s race has raised more money for Seeing is Believing than any previous race thanks to the huge appetite across the City to take part in the event. The funds raised will make an enormous difference to the lives of thousands of people and will go a long way to helping us achieve our target of raising US$100m for the initiative by 2020."

The Bupa Great Edinburgh 10k had 2284 finishers. Getting the event officially started and offering words of encouragement was the role of Shauna MacDonald, star of Ripper Street, Spooks and The Descent, and Cal MacAninch, best known for his roles in Downtown Abbey and Mr Selfridge.

Commenting on the day, Cal MacAninch said: "It was very tough and hot but beautiful, this is my favourite 10k I love it and I run all over the country. Edinburgh looked stunning today! Please come and run next year it's such a great race."

In amongst the runners this year were a host of well known faces, including soap stars Nicola Wheeler (Emmerdale’s Nicola King) and Vicky Binns (Emmerdale’s Ollie Reynolds and Coronation Street’s Molly Dobbs), who were joined by Mr Selfridge actor Trystan Gravelle (Victor) and Ashes to Ashes and Life on Mars star Dean Andrews. Des Clarke, comedian and Capital FM presenter, was also taking part in the 10k.

Speaking prior to the 10k, Trystan Gravelle said: "It's my second time in Edinburgh but my first time doing a 10k, ever, anywhere. I've never done a race before, so I've got a bit of nerves and excitement, everyone says I need to pace myself, I hope I don’t get carried away. I'm really looking forward to it, we're running for Leukemia and Lymphoma Research, it was Carl MacAninch that got me involved and it just feels amazing to be part of it."

Dean Andrews added: "Yeah really looking forward to it today, I’ve never been to Edinburgh before and it’s an amazing place. I wouldn’t call running enjoyment but I love getting out for the events I think it’s great when everybody gets together, and if lads like me can do it then anybody can do it. That’s why I turn up, I’m not a runner as such but I turn out and come and do it, and so should everyone else. We’re running for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, I do a lot of my charity work for them – they're a great bunch and it's a great cause. "

The day kicked off at 0930 with the start of the 5k, followed by the main 10k at 1015. The Bupa Great Mini Edinburgh Run (1.5k for ages 3 – 8) and the Bupa Great Junior Edinburgh Run (2.5k for ages 9 – 14) took place in the afternoon.

Scotsman Andrew Lemoncello was first over the finish line in the 10k, completing the route in just 30 minutes 18 seconds, closely followed by Yared Hagos of Ethopia in a time of 30:27 and Stephen Scullion from Belfast in a time of 30:57. The first woman over the line was Jen Rhines from the USA who finished in 34 minutes 22 seconds. She was followed by two Scots, Nicola Duncan in 36:35 and Jennifer McLean in 36:37.

Andrew Lemoncello said: "The home crowd was fantastic today, even though I felt tired they helped make the difference and pushed me on to victory... it's just magic! Last year when I ran I put everything on the line and still came up short so it was great to be able to win today. I did feel tired as I didn't get much sleep because of the jet lag, so I'm just glad I managed to pull it off. The next big one will be the Bank of Scotland Great Scottish Run, I'm really looking forward to that one, but everything now is focused on The Commonwealth Games in 2014."

Jen Rhines said:  "It feels amazing, I'm so excited to come here and win at such a great race. I've got to say you guys love your hills here, it was a tough course to get around! The atmosphere was fantastic though and it's just been a beautiful day. This was my first road race in Europe actually, so that makes it extra special, but I expect to be back racing in the Bupa Great Run series soon."

Andy Mitchelmore from Nova International, organisers of the Bupa Great Edinburgh Run, said: ““It was fantastic to see thousands of participants at the Bupa Great Edinburgh Run across four events today. The atmosphere was electric and we have received positive feedback from participants.

“The Bupa Great Edinburgh Run is a fantastic event that really does cater for all abilities, with the mini and junior events as well as the 5k and 10k. Complete beginners to seasoned athletes all equally enjoy taking in the sights as they walk, jog or run around Scotland’s glorious capital city.”
