We have looked at the top ten male and female performances on the road, from the results we have, based on the handicap score for last week's performances.
To calculate the top ten we have taken the basic handicap score for the performance on the day and the SSS score which rates how difficult it was to run a quick time on the day and arrived at the net score which is the basic minus the SSS.
The table below also shows the actual handicap score, which also factors in their previous performances and regular racing.
Top of the men's charts this week is Scott Overall who finished 14th in the BMW Berlin Marathon where the winner, Dennis Kimetto, knocked 26 seconds off the world record, taking it below the 2 hour 3 minute mark for the first time. His time of 2:02:57 takes the world record ever closer to the sub two hour mark. Scott ran 2:13:00 in this race and got a net handicap score of MINUS 6.0.
Top of the women's chart this week is Gemma Steele whose run in the Bupa Great Yorkshire Run proved to be a triumphant procession through the streets of the Steel City.
Three weeks on from her breakthrough world class half marathon run for second place behind Mary Keitany in the Bupa Great North Run, the 28-year-old Charnwood athlete led the elite women’s section of the 10km event from start to finish, winning by two minutes and 54 seconds from Julie Briscoe (handicap 0.5) of Wakefield Harriers in 33 minutes 19 seconds.
The men’s race was a much closer affair, with Stockport’s Ross Millington, Tipton’s Ryan McLeod and Matt Hynes of Gateshead Harriers all in contention until the closing stages.
Millington attempted to break clear with two kilometres to go but was caught and passed by McLeod and Hynes. The New Mexico University graduate managed to dig deep, though, and regained the lead on a climb near the finish and hung on to win by two seconds from McLeod in 30 minutes 20 seconds. Hynes was third in 30:26. All three make our top ten this week with net handicap scores of MINUS 4.7, MINUS 4.7 and MINUS 4.6 respectively.
Runners in the Baxters Loch Ness Marathon also feature prominently this week. Manchester-based Tomas Abyu returned from a lengthy spell of training in Ethiopia to claim his fourth Loch Ness Marathon title in fine style.
Tomas looked composed throughout the 26.2 mile race which started on the high ground between Fort Augustus and Foyers and followed a route along the south shores of Loch Ness before finishing at the Bught Park in Inverness.
Abyu, who is a former Great Britain international, sprinted strongly through the finishing tape in 2hr 22min 41sec to add to his previous victories in 2003, 2010 and 2011.
Edinburgh-based Polish athlete Patryk Gierjatowicz collected the Scottish title for the second year in a row when finishing in the runner-up position in a personal best 2:24:17, while last year’s Loch Ness champion Tarus Elly was third in 2:25:37.
There was a dramatic finish to the women’s race in which Jen Emsley held off a late challenge from title-holder Megan Crawford to take the top prize in a new course record time of 2:46:10, knocking 27secs off the previous standard. Crawford was also inside the old record, which she set twelve months earlier, when finishing just 15 secs behind, while Shona McIntosh took the bronze in 2:53:15.
