The Nos Galan races take place annually, on New Year's Eve, in Mountain Ash, The first Nos Galan race was run in 1958 and was established to commemorate the 18th Century legendary runner, Guto Nyth Brân,who developed his running talents whilst herding sheep on his father's farm. He ran 'professionally' and was so good that it became difficult to find anyone willing to race him. Legend has it that he died after winning a race for 1000 guineas, from Newport to Bedwas, during the post-race celebrations.
Each year, at the Nos Galan race, a famous sporting personality lays a wreath on Guto's grave. The invited guest is kept secret until the night of the race. This year, rugby player, Alun Wyn Jones took this honour. After laying the wreath, he ran to Mountain Ash carrying a flaming torch before the main race took place with the biggest ever field of almost 900 runners.
Stephen Mitchell (handicap MINUS 4.7) won the elite race in a new personal best of 14:39, just ahead of 2012 winner Ieuan Thomas (handicap MINUS 3.4) in 14:46.
Kate Roberts (handicap 1.4 )was first female across the line running a superb 16:49, missing Andrea Whitcombe’s (handicap 1.1) course record by just four seconds.
