The Diez Kilmetros de la Ciudad de Len 2011 - a two part story by Oliver Johnston
Regular runbritain contributor Oliver Johnston raced in the ‘Diez Kilómetros de la Ciudad de León 2011’ for the second successive year after a great experience in the inaugural event 12 months earlier, which he said was “a fabulous event for both runners and the city.”
His experience, once again, was a hugely positive on. However, for Oliver, the race will sadly be remembered and overshadowed for what happened after it, when he and his Spanish girlfriend Raquel were involved in a serious car accident.
He wanted to tell his story and to share it with his fellow runbritain runners.
In part one (published 2 April) he writes about how road racing in Spain continues to grow and develop. He tells how the road race scene is different to in Britain, arguably - even - a bit more fun; “more serious at times yet more communal; more disorganised at times, yet better value for money and with good sponsorship. It is a collection of contradictions.”
In part two (published 5 April) he writes about the aftermath of the crash, his time in hospital (he remains there, over five months later) and his progress, albeit slow.
He also reminds everyone about the importance of blood donation and how vital that is in saving lives.
