Racing update
Max Burgin provided one of the highlights of the week with a 1:44 800m performance in Ostrava on Tuesday night. On home soil, Gemma Steel and John Beattie were the fastest parkrunners.
Max Burgin (handicap -2.7) ran another amazing 800m at the Golden Spike meeting in the Czech Republic. Burgin clocked 1:44.54 for third place in the men’s 800m as fast-finishing Kenyan teenager Emmanuel Wanyonyi won in 1:44.15. Adelle Tracey (handicap -2.3) ran a 1500m PB of 4:02.55 in a race won by Diribe Welteji of Ethiopia in 3:59.19.
Over the weekend, at the European 10,000m Cup in Pace, France, the Great Britain and Northern Ireland senior women’s team bagged bronze after some superb performances.
Abbie Donnelly (handicap -1.3) shone brightly as she set a personal best on her way to ninth spot and leading Brit in the race. Her time of 32:20.82, which was just 0.82s outside the European championships qualifying standard, was a big improvement for the Lincoln Wellington athlete who took 26 seconds off her best which she set at the Night of 10,000m PBs a fortnight ago.
Next counter for GB & NI was Hannah Irwin (handicap -1.3), who was competing for the British team for the first time in her career. She was 14th in a time of 32:44.38, just ahead of her compatriot Lauren Heyes (handicap -1.5) who was 15th in 32:49.69. Philippa Bowden (handicap -1.1) was next in 22nd in a time of 33:22.05, while Jess Gibbon (handicap -2.0) was 23rd in 33:24.86 just ahead of Northern Ireland’s Ann Marie McGlynn (handicap -0.4). Steph Twell (handicap -0.4) did not finish after going through halfway in 16:14.61.
In the men’s race, Mahamed Mahamed (handicap -7.0) crossed the line in 23rd in 28:38.03, while Tom Anderson (handicap -6.3) did not finish.
Ellie Baker (handicap -2.1) and Ben MacMillan (handicap -5.2) were among the winners at the BMC Grand Prix in Manchester. Baker won the women’s 1500m in 4:11.87 ahead of Hannah Nuttall (handicap 0.4), while MacMillan ran inside the Scottish Commonwealth Games standard as he won the men’s event in 3:40.60.
Elsewhere, subject to ratification, Ben Sandilands (handicap -4.6) set a T20 800m world record of 1:52.55. The Fife athlete trains in the same group as Paralympic champion Owen Miller.
At the Poznan Grand Prix, in Poland, over 1000m, Ben Pattison (handicap -5.7) won and set a PB of 2:19.27.
Fastest parkruns were from Gemma Steel (handicap -0.3) and John Beattie (handicap -3.4). The Chalkwell Beach parkrun saw Beattie win in 15:04 while at the Watermead County Park parkrun, Gemma Steel ran 16:16.
