parkrunning in Australia - latest runbritain blog

I’ll be honest and admit that (on a personal level) I hadn’t quite bought into the whole “parkrun” thing. It’s obviously an amazing initiative and as soon as I was aware of it I signed up for the newsletter and checked out the impressive weekly participation figures (the current record is just over 22,000 from Saturday 8 September), but I wasn’t convinced I’d actually do one, more out of laziness than anything else; a 9am start on what can be a rare Saturday off just wasn’t massively appealing.
But, in what can only be described as uncharacteristic for a weekend, I, along with a few friends, opted to make my parkrun debut at 7am on Saturday 29 September at New farm, in Brisbane, Australia.
Before you question my thought process, early starts are the norm “Down Under” and although we’d only been there a few days at the start of a holiday, a combination of jet lag-generated weird sleep patterns, bright sunshine and the promise of breakfast in a nearby cafe made it a perfectly appealing option.
