Nottingham celebrates in style with Robin Hood and runners in their thousands
The 2018 Ikano Bank Robin Hood Marathon Events saw almost 9,000 runners lace up and take to the city. Richard Whitehead MBE and The Lord Mayor of Nottingham, Councillor Liaqat Ali set the runners on their way from Victoria Embankment for the 38th edition of the event.
Chris Rainsford (handicap -3.9) and 23-year old Katherine Wood (handicap 1.7) were crowned winners of the Men’s and Women’s Half Marathon in this event that incorporated the England Half Marathon Championships.
With the doors now closed on the 2018 race weekend, race organiser, Goldline Events, is excited to announce that the 2019 race weekend will take place on the 28th and 29th September 2018. Registrations are now open.
2018 male half marathon winner, Chris Rainsford of Highgate Harriers (race time 1:07:54*), said: “This was my first time at the race and to cross the line with a new PB is amazing. The support along the course was fantastic, it's a great location and there’s a really fun atmosphere – I’ll be back next year to hopefully retain my crown!”
Alastair Watson (handicap -4.4) followed in a masterful 2nd place time of 1:09:28 and team-mate Anthony Woodward (1:11:22) took third.
Topping the women’s half marathon race in 1:17:34 was Katherine Wood from Sale Harriers. Smashing her personal best race time by over two minutes, Katherine said: “Once I found my stride, I had a great race. The race conditions couldn’t have been better today, I felt great out there. To cross the line as first lady and to be crowned England Athletics Champion, it’s been a great Sunday!”
Rotherham Harriers athlete, Sophie Cowper (handicap 1.2) took second place in 1:18:46, followed by Charlotte Firth (handicap 3.3).
Cancer Research UK fundraiser, Mark Poyser (54) said: “I can't thank the public enough for their cheers and support along the whole route. It was a brilliantly organised race with fantastic marshals. I ran a 2:30 half, nowhere near my PB but today was about my family and chosen charity, Cancer Research. So many of my family have been affected by cancer, I want to do my bit to help raise vital funds for ongoing research."
