Marathon a runaway success as thousands hit streets of Chester

More than 3,000 entrants and 7,000 spectators came together on Sunday 7 October to help make the 2012 MBNA Chester Marathon a resounding success.

Now in its third year, spectators dotted the route throughout Chester city centre and parts of North Wales in glorious sunshine to cheer on the runners, including the eventual winner Ray Ward from Hunters Bog Trotters, Edinburgh who finished the race in 2:28:46 followed by Anthony Valentine of Bolton United Harriers and Athletics (2:29:47) and Phill Taylor of Bridlington Road Runners (2:32:40).

First lady was Mel Frazier of Gravesend RR & AC in 2:51:48, nearly two minutes ahead of nearest rival Sophie Carter of Woodstock Harriers (2:53:43) followed by Alison Hopkins of Ealing Southall & Middlesex (2:57:51).

Chris Hulse, the organiser of the race - an even that has been voted best in the North West by the readers of Runner’s World - said: “There were some truly excellent performances and we hear many runners achieved personal best times. The feedback we have received tells us that yet again the course has been a big hit with participants who were impressed with everything the race had to offer. That kind of feedback makes it all worthwhile and tells us all the hard work from everyone involved has really paid off.”

“This year’s MBNA Chester Marathon has been better than ever before and we’re delighted at the fantastic atmosphere and organisation that we saw on the day. We take our hats off to the athletes, volunteers and supporters who all played their part in making it such a remarkable day!”
