London Calling...for everyone!
So, at last the 'real' Olympics has begun. Don't get me wrong, I’m not adverse to a bit of alternative sporting action; I've watched Michael Phelps with amazement (“I finished my career how I wanted to,” he said, after bowing out of the Olympic Games and retiring from an unparalleled career with 18 gold medals and 22 overall) and I cheered loudly when the French men came from behind to take gold in the 4 x 100m freestyle relay title in an event due to be dominated (apparently!) by the US and Australia.
I celebrated the success of our rowing team as they kept on winning; I had tears in my eyes as our men's team made the podium after a stunning display in the gymnastics; and I joined in with the Sunday lunch pub crowd as Andy Murray at last destroyed Roger Federer to take tennis gold. But, in my absolutely unbiased opinion, the Olympics came to life with the start of track and field, when at last the gates to the Olympic Park opened to 80,000 fans of the number one sport.
