Lloyd Cowan an unsung unassuming coach will be remembered as 'one of the greats'

What is particularly interesting was that few reflected on his technical ability which was clear from coaching Olympic champion Christine Ohuruogu to 400m gold in 2008, but rather his humanity and modest selfless drive to support the athletics community. This is reflected in many of the athletics community who have expressed their grief on his passing.

World Athletics president Seb Coe (@sebCoe)  said “A really sad start to the athletics’ year – a great coach, mentor and team mate. A massive loss to the sport.”

Olympic, world, European and Commonwealth long jump gold medallist Greg Rutherford added: “Gutted to hear Lloyd Cowan has passed away. He was a massive personality and so helpful to so many (including myself) when coming through the ranks. Never again will I hear ‘Ruddy’ shouted in his distinctive voice and his big smile when meeting. RIP Lloydy Lloyd.”

Athletes from around the world have paid tribute to Cowan with stories about how instilled confidence, made them laugh and helped them find a love for the sport. Many he didn't even coach.

There were social media posts from legends like Jamaica's Usain Bolt and Shelly Fraser-Pryce, who said: "No trip to London would be complete without a conversation with Coach Lloyd. His laugh and smile was everything, especially around the discussion of Jamaican food or jokes. You will be missed."

Olympic head coach Christian Malcolm added:

“I’m still in absolute shock and still can’t quite believe Lloyd is no longer with us. He was such a huge character, always with a smile on his face and a joke to share.

I always remember training at UC Irvine in my early career. If there was anything we needed. Lloyd was the man that could get anything done and make anything possible to help us.

No matter who you were, Olympic champion or a 13 year old starting out, he always made time for you and really made you feel like you could achieve the impossible.

We’ve lost a great coach and a personality that can never be replaced.
