The much awaited debut from Canada-based PE teacher, Sarah Inglis, came to fruition over the weekend with an excellent marathon performance in Arizona at the North American ‘Marathon Project’ event. With 74 and 75 minute splits her pacing was almost on point for this debutant over 26 miles and saw her take top spot in the rankngs for 2020.

Sarah Inglis (handicap -1.6) clocked 2:29:41 in the North American ‘Marathon Project’ and was just 11 seconds shy of the marathon qualifying time for next year’s Olympics and well placed for prospects at the Commonwealth Games in 2022. The race was won by Sara Hall in 2:20.32 and 12 women went sub 2:30.

With such a solid debut, the selection battle in the spring of 2021 for Tokyo and from now until Birmingham 2022 will be fierce.

Sarah, who has two other well known running siblings and has been running for Lothian Running Club for many years, had unofficial splits of 74:46 and 75:05 in this debut.

The men’s race saw Martin Hehir, who is a full-time medical student in Philadelphia and has worked in ICU during the pandemic, take two and a half minutes off his previous best. Running 2:08:59, he won ahead of Noah Droddy with 2:09:09 and Colin Bennie with 2:09:38.

Also making his marathon debut was Matt Leach (handicap -4.8) who ran 2:17:38 which augurs well for the future especially considering his 62:57 half marathon in Houston earlier this year.
