Goolab wins 20th anniversary Serpentine 5k
Nick Goolab, a former European Junior Cross Country silver medallist, won the 20th anniversary Serpentine 5k - an event which takes place weekly on the last Friday of the each month - in London last week.
Belgrave Harriers’ Goolab, who has taken time out from competitive running action over the last year or two to concentrate on his university studies, clocked 15:20 to take the win, almost one minute quicker than second-placed Rick Weston (16:13) of the host club, with Nick Morgan (Waverley H) in third (16:48).
The Serpentine “last Friday of the month” 5k is open to everyone and is held under UK Athletics rules.
It was borne out of a 5km handicap race which was first staged in Hyde Park in the late 1980s by the London Runners’ Club, and following the demise of that club. it was revived by Serpentine Running Club on the last Friday of the last three months of 1992.
After a short gap, the race became firmly established in April 1993 and in April 2011 celebrated its 100thrunning.
