Glasgow sees Thompson retain his title over 21k

Chris Thompson (handicap -6.7) was in great form this weekend as he  took the Great Scottish Half Marathon for the second year in a row. Luke Traynor (handicap -6.3) was also in sub 63 minute form as he landed the Scottish Half Marathon title in third place. 

Great Britain international, Thompson, was positive and impressive as he forced the pace, pulling away early from Traynor and then building the lead to finish in 62:07. Polish runner  Marcin Chabowski split them as he took second place in 62:24 with Luke Traynor stopping the clock at 62:57.

Afterwards, Luke Traynor commented, 'It was tough today and I should be capable of running like that without finding it so tough – I’m just a couple of weeks short, probably

'I’m proud of how I ran but I don’t have the endurance yet to hold that pace. It was super-windy and it was a grind and Chris has been up at altitude so I couldn’t keep up with him.

'But I feel I’m in the process of taking that next step. I’m ready to hit a big half-marathon. He was ready here and I wasn’t. This summer I had unfinished business on the track but I had maybe too long a break afterwards. I will do some cross country this winter and take it from there.’

The Women’s race was won by Mare Dibaba in 69.15 from Rose Chelimo who ran the course in 70.07 with American Alia Gray third in 73.32. Fionnuala Ross (handicap -0.5) was the best of the home talent with a 74:11 PB.
