Footballer's London run in memory of his mum

Footballer, Grant Basey, ran the London Marathon in memory of his mother and has, so far, raised more than £1000 towards vital funds to support The Institute of Cancer Research.
Grant is a professional footballer who has played for Charlton, Brentford, Barnet, Wycombe Wanderers and Peterborough United, and currently plays for Cray Wanderers.
He lost his mother to bowel cancer just before running the marathon last year. He was offered one of the charity's golden bond places on the day of her funeral – spurring him on to start raising funds for cancer research in her memory and he repeated the effort again this year.
After his mother’s death, Grant felt he particularly wished to support cancer research. He decided to support the ICR because of its excellent track record of discoveries in different areas of cancer research and his confidence that the work makes a real difference to cancer patients’ lives.
Grant said: “Because of the high demand for marathon places I didn’t dream that I would be successful last year but I received a phone call to hear the great news that I had been offered a place and I jumped at the chance. I think it was fate that I received the call on the day of my mother's funeral. I was grateful to also be given the chance to run again this year and continue my support for the ICR."
Charlotte Orrell-Jones, Head of Events at the ICR, said: “We were delighted that Grant took part in the London Marathon for the second time in support of ICR. Continued support and a long-term commitment from volunteers is so important in our fight against cancer. Grant’s hard work and determination is really appreciated.”
