Focus on running at Sheffield Adventure Film Festival 2013

The 2013 Sheffield Adventure Film Festival film programme has just been released and there are more films than ever with 80 of the best adventure, travel and extreme sports films, including ultra and off road running, hand-picked for you from around the world. That’s 1,680 minutes of film screened over one weekend at Sheffield’s art deco Showroom Cinema - the UK’s biggest independent cinema outside London.
The 2013 trailer by award-winning film-maker Alastair Lee with soundtrack by Sheffield six piece Screaming Maldini has had nearly 17,000 hits in its first week.
This year five running films are being shown including a Saturday night premiere of ‘The Dragon’s Back’ about the 2012 revival of the legendary 320k/17,000m ascent race along the mountainous spine of Wales. The premiere will be followed by a Q&A with 1992 race winner Helene Whitaker, 2012 winner Steve Birkinshaw and race director Shane Ohly.
There’s another chance to see The Dragon’s Back on Sunday evening in a special Run Films quartet including ‘Collective Dreams’ - a look at how Kilian Jornet and Anna Frost from Team Salomon are shaping the highly individual discipline of endurance running into a team sport. Also check out Adrenaline Films for the the short but incredibly steep ‘Red Bull 400’ - a 400m race up a ski jump with 180m of vertical gain on an average gradient of 45%!
On Sunday afternoon our Running Lecture is by ladies’ Bob Graham record holder Nicky Spinks describe the highs and lows of going from 4-miles to the 24-Hour Mountain Distance Record, including her own personal battle in dealing with cancer.
Can’t wait ‘til March? Don’t worry, on Wednesday 13th February Sheffield Running store Accelerate are hosting an Expert Night on getting to the start line with advice from fell runners Nicky Spinks, Stuart Bond and Jason Ward, plus Marathon des Sables ultra runner Darryl Watton as well as sports science and exercise physiologist Adela Carter and coach.
Sheffield Adventure Film Festival Director Matt Heason said: “We’re delighted to be premiering ‘The Dragon’s Back’ at ShAFF. Running films are going from strength to strength. In years gone by we didn’t even show films about running. Now we not only have a special Run screening but last year ‘‘Unbreakable - The Western States 100’ was the first running film to ever win the Grand Prize in ShAFF’s 8 year history.”
ShAFF judge, adventure sports writer and endurance runner Nik Cook said: “As a runner myself it’s great to see such a strong running line up of films and speakers. If you’re finding it hard to get motivated on these cold dark nights, come along and get top tips first hand from some of the best British runners and be inspired by watching the world’s finest runner on the big screen.”
And because variety’s the spice of life (and perhaps not all your family and friends are runners!) there’s a whole host of other adventure sports films, talks and lectures as well as four family-friendly Young Adventurers and two new Teen Screen showings. Don’t forget the Showroom Cinema has a comfy bar/cafe with live music where you can relax in between screenings. We’ll also have a MyOutdoorsUK photo exhibition and Single Shot photo competition and our second hand kit sale. And on Friday night the one and only Niall Grimes will be hosting the ShAFF Adventure Quiz.?
