Farah misses out as Cherry Alexander takes the IAAF Women in athletics award

Cherry Alexander the head of International Events at UK Athletics took the IAAF  award that recognises contributions by women to athletics globally. 

At the annual IAAF ceremony, World champions Mutaz Essa Barshim (High Jump) and Nafissatou Thiam (Heptathlon)  have been named IAAF athletes of the year in Monaco.

Britain's Olympic champion Mo Farah was nominated  after winning world 10,000m gold and 5,000m silver in August, this year. 

The highlight for the British representatives was the IAAF win for Cherry Alexander, who has steered British Athletics International events to the top of podium in terms of quality athletics and commercial success, as highlighted at the 2017 World Athletics Championships in London. Cherry will continue to steer further success with the World Indoor Championships at Birmingham in 2018.

Qatari high jumper Barshim, 26, went through the season undefeated and won gold at the World Championships. Belgium's Thiam, 23, won gold in the heptathlon in London to add to her Olympic title at Rio 2016 ahead of Britain's Jess Ennis. 

Usain Bolt also received an IAAF award for his contributions to the sport.
