Do you need a 10 mile race programme?

These days, most commonly run events are 5k, 10k, half marathon and marathon but the classic 10 miler, that was more popular before we went metric, is a great step up from the 10k and superb preparation for the half marathon.
10 miles is a great distance to race over and is, in fact, closer to your threshold pace than 10k or half marathon and so, by running a 10 mile race, you will be able to guage your threshold pace far more effectively. Your anaerobic threshold pace is the pace that you can run at just before you move from aerobic state (where you can run and chat at the same time) to anaerobic state (where you are out of breath and can't hold a conversation) and with training, you can move your threshold pace up so that eventually you will be able to run faster at a comfortable, conversational pace.
Despite 10 mile races being far and few between, there are several coming up through the autumn and winter racing calendar. Click here for a list of those available. Included in this list is the PUMA Stockport 10 that takes place on 7 December and we have a training programme that prepares runners for this race.Although this is aimed at the Stockport 10, it can easily be adapted for any 10 mile race that takes place after 7 December.
Good luck with your 10 mile race and happy training!
