Could you marshall at the Windermere Marathon?

Rod Berry is calling on others to help at this year’s 10th Brathay Windermere Marathon on Sunday 22 May.

Rod Berry, well known in the running world through the Great Langdale road races which he started in 1988, is already hard at work spreading the word. The 79 year old is handing out leaflets at events and he has signed up family members to marshal on the day for the Ambleside based Brathay Trust’s flagship fundraising event.

Rod is one of more than 100 volunteers who are needed to support over 1,000 runners and their families and friends who will be taking part in either the Windermere Marathon, a new half marathon, Junior Races and a Family Fun Day. The day also sees the 10in10ers, those tackling 10 marathons in 10 days, complete their final lap. Over the years the events have raised over £1million for the charity whose mission is to improve the life chances of vulnerable children and young people.

As Brathay’s volunteer co-ordinator Sarah Thompson explained:

“We are delighted to have an experienced hand like Rod on board for our 10th flagship fundraiser. A runner himself, and past race director, he knows exactly how to encourage and support participants. Marshals play a critical role on the day. By donating their time they enable us to raise even more money for young people who deserve a better life.

“We are also very glad of the regulars, groups and individuals who support the event each year.

“It takes a great deal of organisation to make this event happen safely and to make sure everyone has a great day out. We are very keen to hear from anyone who would like to be a marshal on the day” added Sarah.
