Celtic wins for Mageean and Samuel at Tameside BMC 5k
Tom Lancashire and Ciara Mageean were the headline entries on paper and although Tom was undone by an in-form Rob Samuel, Mageean delivered again.
While the Tameside Cycle Circuit in Ashton under Lyne has been used for road repetitions by East Cheshire Harriers over the years, the BMC took full advantage of this pancake flat 5k course to reward many members with PBs on a cold spring day.
Working together with her new training partner, Izzy Fry (handicap -0.5), Irish 800m record holder Ciara Mageean (handicap -2.4), eased away with a 6:08 last 2k to win the women’s race. Close behind were Fry in 16:15 and Sarah Astin (handicap -0.2).
Rob Samuel (handicap -2.4), led from the front to record a new PB of 14.20 in the men’s 5k. main event with Tom Lancashire (handicap -5.0), in second with 14.33 ahead of Daniel Bebbington (handicap -4.9) who ran 14:41. The standout performance came from 16 year-old Thomas Archer (handicap -3.6) who stormed to a B race victory in 14.38 that took him to 5th on the UK all time U17 list.
Other impressive age group performances came from:
U17 runners Grace Roberts (17.02) and Kaitlyn Sheppard (17.03)
U15 runner, Oscar Schofield (16.04) and U15 sensation Freya Murdoch with 17.09.
The next BMC Road race event is the 3k takes place on Saturday 17th April at East Cheshire track on this same course.
