Athletics programme commences at the Commonwealth Games tonight

The first of the athletics finals at the 2018 Commonwealth Games take place this evening on Currumbin Beachfront as the 20km Race Walk kicks off the programme at 10 pm  (BST) tonight. 

Athletes Tom Bosworth (handicap 6.9 and coached by Andi Drake) and Callum Wilkinson ((handicap 22.4 and also coached by Andi Drake) will challenge for the podium on a 1000m loop on the beachfront.

At around 12:15am Team England’s Gemma Bridge (handicap 8.4 and coached by Mark Wall), Team Wales’ Bethan Davies (handicap 15.9/Drake) and Heather Lewis (Martin Bell) and the Isle of Man’s Erika Kelly (Steve Partington).

5am sees the final of the men’s hammer throw, where there will be a strong home nations representation from England’s Nick Miller (Tore Gustafsson), Taylor Campbell (John Pearson), Scottish duo Mark Dry (Tore Gustafsson), Chris Bennett (Michael Jones), Northern Ireland’s Dempsey McGuigan (John Smith) and Welshman Osian Jones (Carys Parry).

World champion Olivia Breen (Aston Moore) lines up in the T38 long jump final from 6:18am UK time alongside Scotland’s Any Carr (Geoffrey Barraclough) and England’s Molly Kingsbury (Bracknell).

Other events to keep an eye on include the men’s and women’s 100m heats and semi-finals and the men’s 400m heats, which all have home nation interest.

All athletics events taking place at the Gold Coast 2018 Games will run from Saturday, 7 April to Sunday, 15 April, with the track and field events taking place at the Carrara Stadium, which will hold 35,000 spectators throughout the course of the games.

The athletics will end in the early hours of Sunday 15 with the men’s and women’s T54 and elite marathons.
