5000 Brighton school children to Run the World

More than 5000 primary school children from Brighton & Hove will take part in the second edition of RUN THE WORLD over three days from Tuesday October 2 to Thursday October 4 2012.

Run The World is a mass-participation running event where children aged 7 to 11 each run 1km with the aim of amassing a big aggregate distance.

Last year 4,238km were covered, the equivalent distance of Brighton to Bamako in central Africa. This year the target is to cover 5121km, the distance from Bamako to Addis Ababa in Ethiopia.

For the second consecutive year, the event is being supported by Nuffield Health, Southern Water and Healthy Cities.

Preston Park (Oct 2) and Hove Park (Oct 3&4) are being used as the two venues for the event for which twenty-eight primary schools in the city are already registered.

Each child who completes the 1km course will receive a certificate from Race Directors, Grounded Events, the team charged with staging the city’s annual Marathon and Mini-mile Races in April.

Event coordinator Holly Freeman has been delighted with the response from schools to register for the event. “This is the perfect event to capture the enthusiasm from the Olympics and introduce children to running. We are again looking forward to welcoming a large number of schools to the event.”
